Swat is home to some of the world's finest emeralds. The Mingora and Gujar Killi mines have produced gem-quality stones since the 1950s — comparable in quality to Colombian emeralds.
Emeralds in Swat were known to local villagers for centuries, but commercial mining began in 1958 when the Wali of Swat granted exploration rights. The main deposit lies at Mingora and Gujar Killi, where talc-carbonate schist hosts some of the world's purest emerald crystals.
After the State of Swat merged with Pakistan in 1969, the mines came under federal control. Today they are managed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mines & Minerals Department, with auctions held quarterly in Peshawar.
Notable historic stones include the 73-carat 'Khyber Emerald' and a 70-carat cabochon now in a private collection in Geneva.

Swat emeralds are famous for a deep, slightly bluish-green colour and very high clarity. Top-grade stones are visually almost indistinguishable from Colombian Muzo emeralds.
Average crystal size: 0.5 to 5 carats. Larger stones (10+ carats) command international premium prices.
Inclusions are typical for natural emeralds and are accepted by gemologists as proof of authenticity. Treat any 'flawless' Swat emerald with suspicion.

Cheen Bazaar (Mingora) is the historic gem trading street: dozens of licensed dealers operate here, many third-generation family businesses.
Dilfaroz Jewellers, Adnan Jewellers, Dulhan Jewellers, JISA Gems, K Gemstones and Nangyal Minerals are among the most reputable names.
Always buy from a shop with a posted dealer licence and request a written certificate stating origin (Swat), carat weight, treatment status and price.
Avoid roadside vendors in Bahrain, Kalam or anywhere outside Mingora; the vast majority sell glass or low-grade Brazilian/Zambian rough.

Commercial grade (1-2 carat, light green): PKR 20,000-40,000 per carat.
Medium grade (1-3 carat, vivid green, eye-clean): PKR 60,000-150,000 per carat.
Top grade (3+ carat, deep bluish-green, very clean): PKR 200,000-500,000+ per carat.
Always cross-check prices at 2-3 shops before buying. Bargaining is expected; expect to negotiate 15-25% off the first quoted price.
Top-grade Swat emeralds are comparable in colour and clarity to Colombian Muzo stones. The biggest difference is brand recognition; Colombian emeralds command higher international prices for the same grade.
Yes. There are no restrictions on exporting loose emeralds from Pakistan up to a value of USD 10,000. Always carry your dealer receipt.
The two main mines are at Mingora (just outside the city) and Gujar Killi village. The mines themselves are not open to tourists for safety reasons.
