BarSwat

Don't leave Swat empty-handed. The valley produces some of Pakistan's best shawls, honey, dry fruits and emeralds. Here's what to buy in each town.
Mingora is the commercial capital of Swat and has the widest range of shops. Cheen Bazaar is the jewellery and emerald district; you will find dozens of licensed dealers selling rough and cut Swat emeralds, gold and silver jewellery and traditional Pashtun bridal sets.
The Main Bazaar (GT Road area) is the everyday shopping strip: dry fruits, spices, electronics, shoes, men's shalwar kameez and affordable readymade clothes.
Commercial Market on Saidu Road has mid-range clothing brands, pharmacies, bakeries and general stores.
Badurahman Market is the specialist area for mobile phones, accessories and local electronics.

Madyan Bazaar is the best place in Swat to buy hand-woven Patti shawls. The bazaar stretches along the main road for about 300 metres and almost every second shop is a shawl or woolen goods seller.
Prices are lower here than in Mingora because you are buying closer to the weavers. A quality Patti shawl runs PKR 3,000-18,000 depending on the thickness, pattern complexity and wool grade.
Look also for traditionally embroidered cushion covers, women's kameez and decorative wall pieces. Most embroidery is still done by hand in the surrounding villages.

Bahrain Bazaar sits at the junction of the Swat and Bahrain rivers and is packed with shawl shops, honey stalls and walnut wood craft sellers targeting the heavy tourist traffic on the Kalam road.
It is the best single stop if you want to pick up several things at once: shawls, mountain honey, dried apricots, walnut wood boxes and embroidered items are all within a 200-metre stretch.
Prices in Bahrain are slightly higher than Madyan due to tourist demand, but still much cheaper than Karachi or Islamabad.

The Government Handicrafts Emporium in Saidu Sharif sells certified, fixed-price items including embroidered pieces, shawls and walnut wood crafts.
Fixed prices mean no bargaining stress, and each item comes with a quality certificate. Ideal if you are not confident about authenticity or price.
Also in Saidu Sharif: Saidu Bazar has traditional medicine vendors (hakims), hardware shops and small-scale cloth merchants.
Avoid 'Swat emeralds' sold at unmarked roadside stalls; they are almost always glass or cheap synthetic stones.
Be cautious with 'royal honey' sold at busy checkpoints and roadsides; genuine mountain honey is sold in shops with visible brand labels and batch dates.
Avoid machine-printed 'Swati embroidery' sold as handmade; check the back of the cloth for hand-stitched irregularities.
A hand-woven Madyan Patti shawl. Lightweight, beautifully patterned and uniquely Swati. Prices start at PKR 3,000 for a basic piece.
Only from licensed dealers in Cheen Bazaar, Mingora, or the Government Emporium in Saidu Sharif. Always ask for a certificate and receipt.
Rarely. Carry enough cash (PKR). Some larger hotels and tourist lodges accept cards but bazaars and small shops are cash-only.
