Bahrain's Mountain Mirror
A serene high-altitude lake hidden in the mountains above Bahrain town. Daral Lake is reached via a scenic 6 km trek through pine forests and alpine meadows, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views of the Swat countryside.
Daral Lake takes its name from the Daral River, which flows from the lake down to Bahrain where it merges with the Swat River. The lake was formed by glacial activity and sits in a natural amphitheater surrounded by pine-covered ridges and rocky peaks.
The lake has been known to local communities for generations. Fishermen from Bahrain would make the arduous climb to fish for trout, which thrives in the cold, oxygen-rich waters. The surrounding forests provided timber and firewood, and shepherds used the nearby meadows for summer grazing.
Daral Lake gained popularity among trekkers in the 2000s as word spread about its beauty and the relatively accessible trek from Bahrain. Today, it is considered one of the best day-trek destinations in Swat Valley. The trail passes through dense pine forests, crosses streams, and opens up to reveal the lake shimmering below mountain ridges.
The trek starts from Bahrain town. Cross the Daral River bridge and follow the trail uphill through the forest. The 6 km trek takes about 3 to 4 hours uphill. The path is mostly clear but a local guide is helpful. You can also hire a horse for part of the journey.
