The White Stream's Alpine Jewel
A remote glacial lake at the base of towering snow peaks in upper Swat. Spin Khwar, meaning 'White Stream' in Pashto, is one of the most untouched natural wonders of the valley, accessible only to the most adventurous trekkers.
Spin Khwar Lake gets its name from the milky-white glacial stream that feeds it, carrying dissolved rock minerals from the glaciers above. The lake sits in one of the most remote and least-visited corners of Swat Valley, in the high mountains between Kalam and the Chitral border.
The lake was historically known only to Gujjar nomads who passed through the area during their seasonal migrations between the lowland winter pastures and the highland summer meadows. These nomadic communities called the area 'the roof of Swat' due to its extreme elevation and the feeling of being close to the sky.
Even today, Spin Khwar remains one of the most challenging destinations in Swat. The multi-day trek rewards those who make it with a landscape of stark, dramatic beauty, where glaciers meet alpine meadows and the silence is broken only by the wind and the occasional call of a golden eagle.
Access is from the upper Kalam area. The trek requires 2 to 3 days round trip with camping. A local guide, porter, and camping equipment are essential. This is not a destination for casual hikers. Arrange everything in Kalam before departure.
