The Hidden Gem Above the Clouds
A pristine alpine lake nestled in a glacial cirque at over 3,000 meters. Kundol Lake is accessible only by a challenging 6 to 8 hour trek from Kalam, making it one of Swat's most rewarding adventures for trekkers.
Kundol Lake sits in a dramatic glacial cirque, formed during the last ice age when massive glaciers carved bowl-shaped depressions into the mountain slopes. The lake is fed entirely by snowmelt and glacial runoff, which gives its water an intense clarity and a characteristic deep blue color.
Unlike Mahodand Lake, Kundol has remained largely inaccessible to casual tourists due to the demanding trek required to reach it. Historically, only local shepherds and hunters ventured to these heights. The lake is sacred to the Torwali-speaking people, who have legends of fairies living in its waters.
In recent years, Kundol has become a bucket-list destination for Pakistani trekkers and international adventure tourists. The trek from Ladu Valley near Kalam passes through some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in the Hindu Kush. Despite its growing fame, Kundol remains unspoiled, with no permanent structures at the lakeside.
The trek starts from Ladu Valley, about 15 km from Kalam. Drive or hire a jeep to the trailhead. The trek to the lake is approximately 10 to 12 km (6 to 8 hours uphill). A local guide is strongly recommended as the trail is not marked. Most trekkers camp at the lake and return the next day.
