Bahrain's Rooftop Garden
A beautiful high-altitude meadow perched above Bahrain town, offering sweeping views of the Swat River valley below. Desan is a serene escape where wildgrass ripples in the mountain breeze and the only sounds are birdsong and wind.
Desan Meadow has been a summer pasture for the communities around Bahrain for as long as anyone can remember. The meadow sits on a natural shelf high above the town, providing the perfect vantage point from which to see the entire Swat River valley stretching north towards Kalam.
The area around Desan was historically part of the forest reserve system established by the Wali of Swat. The forests surrounding the meadow are a mix of pine and deodar cedar, and the meadow itself hosts a variety of alpine grasses and wildflowers that bloom from May through August.
Desan has become increasingly popular as a trekking and camping destination, especially for those who want the alpine meadow experience without the difficulty of reaching higher destinations like Kundol Lake. The relatively short trek from Bahrain (3 to 4 hours) makes it accessible as a day trip or an overnight camping adventure.
The trek begins from Bahrain town. Ask locals for the Desan trail, which starts behind the bazaar area. The 5 km uphill trek takes 3 to 4 hours through forest. A guide is helpful but not essential as locals can point you in the right direction.
