The Jewel of Kalam
A stunning glacial lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks and wildflower meadows. One of the most photographed lakes in Pakistan. Accessible by jeep from Kalam in summer months.
Mahodand Lake, whose name translates to 'Lake of Fishes' in the local Torwali language, is a glacial lake formed thousands of years ago by retreating glaciers. The lake sits at 2,865 meters above sea level in a dramatic amphitheater of snow-capped peaks, fed by snowmelt from the surrounding mountains.
For centuries, Mahodand was known only to local shepherds and the Torwali-speaking communities who grazed their livestock in the surrounding meadows during summer. The lake was virtually unknown to the outside world until the 1970s when adventurous trekkers began reaching it via the rough jeep track from Kalam.
Today, Mahodand is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Pakistan and draws tens of thousands of visitors each summer. Despite its popularity, the lake retains its pristine quality due to its remote location and the short accessible season. The turquoise waters, surrounded by wildflower meadows and snow peaks, create scenes that look almost surreal.
From Kalam, hire a jeep for the 35 km journey (about 2 hours one way). The road is unpaved and only safe for 4x4 vehicles. The track opens in late May or early June depending on snow conditions. Do not attempt in a regular car.
