Pakistan's Enchanted Woodland
One of the densest and most beautiful forests in Pakistan. Towering pine, cedar, and deodar trees with walking trails. A peaceful escape just 8 km from Kalam.
Ushu Forest is one of the last remaining old-growth forests in the Hindu Kush range. The forest is primarily composed of towering Deodar cedars (Cedrus deodara), some of which are estimated to be over 400 years old. The name 'Ushu' is believed to come from the Torwali word for 'beautiful place,' which aptly describes this woodland paradise.
Historically, the forest was a protected reserve under the Wali of Swat, who recognized the ecological importance of these ancient trees. Logging was strictly regulated, which is why Ushu retains its density and old-growth character when so many other forests in the region have been depleted. The forest streams were also famous for their trout, attracting anglers from across the subcontinent.
Today, Ushu Forest is a managed recreational area with marked walking trails, picnic spots, and rest areas. The forest floor is carpeted with ferns and wildflowers in spring, and the canopy dims the sunlight to create an almost mystical atmosphere. For nature lovers and photographers, Ushu is one of the most magical places in Swat Valley.
From Kalam, take the road towards Ushu village. The forest begins about 8 km from Kalam center. You can drive, hire a jeep, or even walk the scenic road. The forest entrance is clearly marked.
